NCU Speech and Debate competes in the Northwest Forensics Conference, testing our mettle against the University of Oregon, George Fox University, the College of Idaho and Northwest Nazarene University, among others. Team members compete in platform speaking on informative, persuasive or entertaining topics; oral interpretation of prose, poetry or drama; and intercollegiate debate, principally in IPDA and BP format. NCU team members have brought home trophies in persuasive speaking and dramatic interpretation and have qualified for NFA Nationals.
The forensics team participates in four tournaments a year including traveling to, Lewis & Clark in October, Linfield College in November, Pacific University in January and Oregon State University in February. NCU hosts two or three Saturday-only scrimmages under the auspices of the Willamette Valley League, which draws debaters from Lane Community College and the University of Oregon. In conjunction with Lambda Pi Eta, the NCU sponsored Ona Bake Literary Society hosts a tournament in October for home-schooling debaters and speakers. There are plenty of opportunities for students participate in competitive forensics at NCU.
Dr. Doyle Srader is the Speech Coach for the forensics team and has been involved with competitive forensics for thirty years.
