If you are struggling with issues (either academic or personal), there are numerous resources on campus that can help you cope and succeed. If you don’t know where to go, your advisor can help direct you to resources on campus that can help meet your specific needs. NCU offers students free tutoring, counseling, career guidance, and much more! Advisors are a safe place to discuss concerns, and we will keep your information confidential.
What if I want to study abroad? How will that impact my graduation plan?
We strongly encourage all students to consider studying abroad. A study abroad experience can life-changing, and helps students develop global awareness, cross-cultural communication skills, flexibility, maturity, greater self-awareness, and many other valuable skills. By planning ahead, you can ensure that credits earned while studying abroad will help you stay on track for graduation. Your advisor and the Off-Campus Studies Coordinator will work with you to map out an academic plan that includes studying abroad. Are tutoring services available?
Yes, free online tutoring is available to all students at NCU in the following subjects: business, computer & technology, English, mathematics, and science. Our tutoring provider, Brainfuse, can be accessed via MyNCU. Live tutoring is available 7 days a week, and questions or papers can be submitted 24/7. When do I meet with my advisor?

What does the registration process look like?
UNDERGRADUATE: You will need to schedule an appointment with your academic advisor each term for registration. Registration dates are posted on the academic calendar, and your advisor will also contact you via your NCU email to remind you to schedule an appointment. Prior to meeting your advisor, you should review the course offerings page, and select the courses you would like to take based on your 4-year graduation plan. Be sure to consider time conflicts and prerequisites when selecting classes. Submit your registration request to your advisor electronically (see here for submission instructions). Arrive on time for your registration appointment. You and your advisor will discuss your course selections and graduation plan. If no changes need to be made, the advisor will send your approved course requests to the Registrar’s Office for processing.
Please note that some majors including Accounting, Communications, and Exercise Science also require an appointment with the program director each semester. Please see your academic advisor for more information about scheduling appointments for students in these majors.

GRADUATE: Students in all of our graduate programs are automatically registered for classes. Please contact your advisor if you need to make a change to your graduation plan.
What is the difference between dropping and withdrawing from a course?
A 16-week course may be dropped with a full tuition refund if dropped by the end of the second week of the semester. A dropped course will not appear on a student’s transcript, and students receive a full tuition refund.
An 8-week course may be dropped with a full tuition refund if dropped by the end of the first week of the class. A dropped course will not appear on a student’s transcript, and students receive a full tuition refund.
Students may request to withdraw from a course if no more than two-thirds of the course timeframe has elapsed at the time of withdrawal. A ‘W’ will be recorded on the student’s transcript, although this mark is not included in the GPA calculation. Full tuition is assessed for withdrawals. A student may also be administratively withdrawn for non-participation which will result in a ‘WF’ on the transcript if a student is failing at the time of withdrawal, or if more than two-thirds of the course timeframe has elapsed at the time of withdrawal. A ‘WF’ will be computed in the GPA as an ‘F’.
Academic deadlines (adding, dropping, etc.) How do I withdraw from (or drop) a course?
UNDERGRADUATE: You will need to complete a change of registration form to add, drop, or withdraw from a course. You should follow the guidelines under ‘Required signatures’ to determine which additional signatures are required. At the minimum, your academic advisor’s signature is required for all registration changes. Academic deadlines are posted on the academic calendar. Changes in registration after the deadline require submission and approval of an academic petition.
ADULT DEGREE: You should contact your academic advisor to request a drop or withdrawal from a course.
What are prerequisites?
There are two different types of prerequisites at NCU. Course prerequisites are requirements that must be met before a student may take a particular course. Major prerequisites are requirements that should be met before beginning classes in the academic major.
What should I do if I don’t meet the prerequisites for a class I want to take?
If you do not meet the prerequisites for a particular course, you should first speak to your academic advisor. You and your advisor can discuss how to fit prerequisites into your graduation plan. If you and your advisor determine that you need to take a course without having met a prerequisite, you must obtain instructor approval. Please print off the registration form, available in MyNCU Student Forms, and take it to the instructor for approval. The registration form should then be submitted to your academic advisor.
If you do not meet the major prerequisites to begin taking classes in your major, you should speak to your academic advisor to determine the best course of action.
Can I repeat a class?
Yes, you can repeat a class, but you may not earn credit for a class twice. For example, if you earn a grade of a ‘D’ in a class and decide to repeat the course the following semester, the second grade will replace the ‘D’ in your GPA calculation. However, you will only receive credit for the class once.
Can I take a class Pass/No Pass?
You may take a maximum of 12 credits as a P/NP grading option. No P/NP grading option is allowed in the major/minor/certificate program except in those courses in which P/NP is the only grading option. The individual instructor has the prerogative to approve or deny requests for the P/NP grading option. Approval of the instructor must be received by the end of the add/drop period. This choice, once made, is final and cannot be revoked. To request a P/NP option, please complete the Pass/No Pass form available here in MyNCU Student Forms.
How many credits can I take?
All undergraduate students in good academic standing may take a maximum of 18 credits per semester. Students on academic probation are limited to a maximum of 13 credits. A full-time course load is 12-18 credits per semester, and traditional undergraduate students pay the same price for tuition within the 12-18 credit block. Adult degree program students are assessed tuition on a per credit basis.
How do I find my class schedule?
Class schedules for the current term are available in the Student Portal. To access your schedule, log-in to MyNCU, and select ‘Student Resources’ on the left-hand menu, and then choose ‘Student Portal’. Your student schedule can be found under the ‘Grades’ menu in the Student Portal.
What does it mean to come prepared to your advising appointment?
Coming prepared to your advising appointment ensures that you and your advisor are able to maximize your appointment time. Being prepared means you arrive on time for your appointment with a list of questions or topics for discussion. Always bring your advising folder with you to your appointment so you can update any information during the meeting. If you have a registration appointment, you should submit electronic course requests prior to your appointment. If you are unable to submit electronic requests, you should bring a list of the courses for which you would like to register.
What to do if you have a hold on your account? Should you still make an advising appointment? How do I get a hold lifted?
If you have a hold on your account, you should contact your advisor for more information regarding the hold. A hold on your account will prevent you from registering for classes; however, you should still schedule an advising appointment during the normal registration period. Your advisor will process and submit a paper registration request, which will be held until your hold is lifted. Students who submit a paper registration request are not assessed a late registration fee, even if the hold is not lifted until after the registration period.
I just got placed on academic probation – what does that mean?
Students are placed on academic probation when their cumulative GPA falls below a 2.00. If a student is placed on academic probation, he or she is eligible to continue at NCU for one semester. During this semester, a student is limited to 13 credits and is required to participate in the academic success program. The student must raise his or her cumulative GPA to a 2.0 in one semester to avoid academic dismissal. If you are notified that you have been placed on academic probation, you should contact your academic advisor immediately to discuss your course load.
I just got placed on academic warning – what does that mean?
A student whose semester GPA falls below a 2.00, but whose cumulative GPA remains equal to or above a 2.00 is placed on academic warning for the subsequent semester. Students on academic warning may elect to participate in the academic success program. Students should also meet with their academic advisor to discuss resources for improving academic success.
How do I know which textbooks I will need?
Textbook information is accessible from the course offerings page on the NCU website. Ensure ‘School’ and ‘Year’ are set to the correct information. Each course listing has a ‘Textbooks’ link in the lower right-hand corner of the listing. Clicking on this link will open a list of the required textbooks for that particular course. If a student has already registered for classes and has access to MyNCU, personalized textbook information can be found in MyNCU under the ‘My Textbooks for Term/Year’ link under ‘Student Resources’. General information about textbooks is available on the NCU website.
Can I request an incomplete?
Incompletes may be granted at the discretion of the instructor when the student has met the essential requirements of the class with the exception of some minor matters, and the student has an extenuating circumstance that prevents them from completing the course. Tardiness and lack of self-discipline do not constitute a justifiable cause. If an incomplete is awarded, the remaining coursework must be completed within 30 calendar days from the last day of instruction.
How do I check my grades online?
Term grades are viewable under the ‘Grades’ link in the ‘Student Resources’ section of My NCU. Unofficial transcripts are available on the Student Portal under the ‘Grades’ menu.
How do I calculate my GPA?
A GPA calculator is available on the Student Portal (accessible via MyNCU). Students can calculate projected GPAs based on expected grades or calculate the grades and credits needed to raise a GPA to a certain level. For more information about GPA calculations, please review the current catalog’s section entitled, ‘Grade System and Grade Point Average’ under Registration & Academic Policies.

How do I go about choosing a major?
You should consider your interests, strengths, weaknesses, and career goals when selecting a major. The Office of Career Development offers free assessments that may be helpful in identifying areas of particular interest. Students who have not yet selected a major should take classes in possible major fields to begin to get a better understanding of the major. We strongly encourage students to discuss their interests with the Program Faculty as well.
What can I do with my major?
If you have selected a major, but you aren’t sure what you can do with the major after graduation, we encourage you to contact the Office of Career Development at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss career options. Faculty mentors are also an excellent resource for discussing career options related to a particular major.
Do I have to have a minor?
While a minor is not required, students are encouraged to consider selecting a minor. Many students require elective credit to meet the 124 total credit requirement, and a minor is an excellent way to help meet the credit requirement and supplement the skills students learn in their major. Your academic advisor can help you plan your degree completion program to include a minor.
Can I have two majors?
Yes, students can have two majors. It may be more difficult to complete a degree in 4 years with two majors, so students are encouraged to discuss their plans with an academic advisor as soon as possible. Some majors may be more difficult to complete in tandem than others.
How do I go about changing a major?
To change a major, please contact your academic advisor to complete the Major/Minor Declaration form. If you are declaring an Interdisciplinary Studies major, you will also be required to submit a statement of intent detailing the reasons you plan to pursue a major in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Can I participate in the graduation ceremony, even though I won’t be completely done with my degree requirements?
Students who have not yet completed the degree requirements must complete a petition to participate in the graduation ceremony. The petition should be requested from and requires the signature of your academic advisor. If approved, a student may participate in the commencement ceremony, but the degree will not be conferred until all degree requirements have been met.
How do I apply to graduate?
Students should apply to graduate at least one term prior to their expected graduation. Graduation applications should be filled out online on MyNCU.
Will I graduate with honors?
Graduating seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher are eligible for academic honors. A minimum of 45 credits must be earned from NCU to qualify for honors, and all grades earned through completion of the degree will be computed. Only course credits taken at NCU are computed to determine the cumulative GPA for honors.
- Cum laude: for students with a 3.50-3.69 cumulative GPA
- Magna cum laude: for students with a 3.70-3.89 cumulative GPA
- Summa cum laude: for students with a 3.90-4.0 cumulative GPA
Will I still have access to email/MyNCU after I graduate?
You will have access to your NCU email for about 3 months after you graduate. If you have questions about your email account, please contact Information Services at 541-684-7272. However, you will lose access to MyNCU upon graduation. Transcripts can be ordered by following the Transcript Request instructions.
